Greetings from the desert (Arizona)!

So yesterday I ran off to Best Buy and got myself copies (well, it wasn't just for me) of the In Bruges dvd. I watched it right away. Here's what's on the dvd and some comments about it.

The Movie Well, the movie is just great, there isn't really much more to say about that. It's great to have it on dvd.
Deleted Scenes
Gag Reel A lot of fun to watch, really shows the atmosphere on the set, which was focused - but fun and friendly. I was present at one of the shots on the gag reel so that's fun to see.
When In Bruges and Strange Bruges gives you a look on the set and comments from Martin McDonagh and his cast. A lot of fun to watch because the interviews are most all footage that you haven't seen before (for instance online) so it's all new material. The cast talks about their characters and about the film, it's fun to watch.
A Boat Trip Around Bruges Is really literally a boat trip around Bruges. It's a camera on one of the tour boats going around Bruges a bit. I loved watching it; there was mist on the water and the city looked quiet and everything. I can especially imagine how people who've never been to Bruges or live far away from Bruges will love this.
F**king Bruges That would be the entire film, but ONLY the cussing. It's hilarious, we were laughing our asses off. It's just a shitload of cusswords all cut in one reel and it's very funny.

The dvd was $20 at Best Buy. I bought a copy for myself, for the family I'm staying with and for some friends I got over here. I do some good promotion right here :-P But it's a great DVD. There've been plenty of times when I bought special editions of dvds, only to find that the extras were all cut and paste work of stuff I'd already seen. This is a great dvd with fun extras. Good job!

Now all that's left is some Belgian and Dutch reviews upon the movie's release there, and then I think the ride called In Bruges pretty much comes to an end. Again; if you are located in the US you can win the dvd through this website! Just check out the In Bruges Fansite and you will be directed to the competition.

If you're in Belgium, you probably know that there was an In Bruges report on a Belgian show called "De Rode Loper" (The Red Carpet) last night. If you saw it or if you know how I can put it up here on the site, let me know. Arizona is a long, long way from Belgium.

Yes, we're doing one more contest. I'm sorry to say it is US only - but the prize is a US dvd of "In Bruges" so it kinda makes sense. When the dvd is released in Europe, who knows what I'll do.

To win:
1 - be a US resident with a valid address we can send your prize (the "In Bruges" dvd) to.
2 - you can enter through the "Shoutout" section, listed above in the website menu. Go to the Shoutout section, fill out the form with your email address, full name and the answer to the question in the comment box, also your state of residence.
3 - answer the following Question: In which European country is Bruges? Name one European country next to this country. (it's okay, you can pull out a map or go on google)
4 - don't be a smartass and go to the official website of the city of Bruges, because that site will only give you an estimate of a possible entrance fee, and not the numbers I am looking for. You have to remember from the film ;-)
5 - send in your answer and contact information before 24 July.

If you for some reason don't want to use the Shoutout form, you can also email your answer to nell.a@hotmail.com - make sure you add your full name, state, email address (for the record) and the answer.

The winner will be picked completely randomly. I will write your names down on bits of paper and let a friend draw one with their eyes closed. So no worries.

The "In Bruges" dvd will be in US stores 24 June 2008, with a listed price of $29,98 - Amazon sells the DVD for $19,99 from the same date. Order your copy from Amazon here. The dvd includes deleted scenes, extended scenes, a gagreel and features such as "When In Bruges". I am able to host this contest because I will be in the US from next week until early August. The prize will be sent to you by mail on our costs. If you give a false or no postal address (or one that is not a US address) we cannot let you enter the competition.

Dutch magazine "Glamour" has interviewed actress Thekla Reuten, who plays pregnant Marie in In Bruges. Only the first question is about In Bruges, and so that's the only question I will translate and put up here. Enjoy!

In your newest film 'In Bruges' you appear alongside Ralph Fiennes, Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell. What is it like to be on a filmset with such world-famous actors?

I always realize that they, too, have only just woken up or had their breakfast. I'm mostly curious about how someone works or acts during workhours. People aren't necessarily the way you'd expect them to be. Colin shows a very different side of himself in this film. I mainly knew Ralph from intriguing but somewhat aloof film characters. The first time I met Rafe - yes, you have to call him 'Rafe' - kind of confirmed that image. I came onto the set with my pregnancy-costume on, was introduced to him and without introducing himself he started a minutes-long monologue by Beckett about a pregnant woman. That's not arrogance or braggery, it's just that that's the first thing that comes to his mind. He's serious, he's focused, no small talk. Brendan and Colin were completely different. They had a Laurel & Hardy-dynamic going on between them. Constantly joking around. I remember a night with Brendan and his Irish friends in the pub. They'd brought their fiddle, were singing, it was amazing, it was all very open.

After over a year of buzz in Belgium after the filming in Bruges in January/February/March 2007, In Bruges is about to make its entrance in the Belgian and Dutch cinemas. A lot has happened in a year and three months, and talk has circulated about negativity about Bruges, violent themes and nationality stereotypes. The Belgian and Dutch audience, however, will certainly not be bothered by this.

In Bruges is the story of two Irish hitmen; Ken (Brendan Gleeson) and Ray (Colin Farrell) are sent to hide out in Bruges after a job gone bad. While Ken quite enjoys his time amongst the old buildings, Ray hates Bruges before even getting there - and he doesn't change his mind during his stay. The only thing they have to do in Bruges is wait for their boss Harry (Ralph Fiennes) to call. While they are waiting it becomes clear why they are hiding out, and why exactly in Bruges. They meet Chloe (Clemence Poesy) and Jimmy (Jordan Prentice), who are part of a filmset located in Bruges. As their past and present unravel, the phonecall from Harry finally comes in. The phonecall will change everything.

It is needless to say that all actors in this film do not only deliver top performances, they also have amazing chemistry. Brendan Gleeson might seem a silent note comedy-wise compared to his co-stars, it is Brendan Gleeson who connects with Farrell and Fiennes in such a way that allows them to be even more hilarious. And the comedy in In Bruges is top knotch and typically what one would want from a Martin McDonagh film. McDonagh can make the most horrible and violent things incredibly funny with the smallest touches. Don't be surprised to find yourself laughing, in fact don't be surprised to find the entire audience laughing.

The thing that stands out most is the fact that both Colin Farrell and Ralph Fiennes are completely cast out of character from their usual parts - but are shining more than ever. Farrell's Ray is naive and innocent while saying the rudest things, Fiennes' Harry has an incredibly bad gangster-temper. He gives the crime boss not just comedy and anger, but also a lot of layers. It is clear to see that McDonagh talked about the characters to his actors a lot, because the characters are three-dimensional and believable, dispite their unbelievable honour codes and comments.

The cinematography is gorgeous. Bruges truly is a character in the film, and I did not sense any anti-Bruges vibe at all. Ray may bash the city up to one of the very last sentences of the film, his attitude makes it clear that he isn't all that frustrated with Bruges... rather with something else. The same goes for strong language and violence; it's all part of a bigger story, that offers so much more than Rated R content. It is sure to say progressive Benelux countries' audiences will not be bothered by it. The beautiful city of Bruges shines in every single scene. Having been there several times I know Martin McDonagh completely captured the feel of Bruges in this film.

In short: an original plot, strong acting, amazing chemistry, beautiful cinematography and last but not least a perfect score to the film. Believe me, if I'd waited for this film for over a year and had hated it, I would have said so, too. But In Bruges is the perfect mix of deep black comedy and darkness. Belgium and The Netherlands will love this film. We will all be nothing but proud of Belgium's beautiful city and Holland's beautiful actress Thekla Reuten (who more than holds her own amongst the big names).

Stars: ***** (5/5)

The In Bruges Fansite owes a lot to Camera Studio (a cinema) in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Especially for me, because I was going abroad before the film was going to be released (and they knew I ran the website and was an extra), they told me when their Sneak Preview of In Bruges would be; last Tuesday. Dispite my health condition (because unfortunately my health wasn't very well for a few days) I went to the cinema...

And I got to see In Bruges on the big screen after all. My review will follow soon.

A world of thank you to Camera Studio cinema in Utrecht, The Netherlands. If you happen to be in Utrecht, and you want to see In Bruges, go see it in Camera Studio; the cinema that cares about film fans :-)

In very short: the entire audience was laughing the entire time, everyone loved In Bruges. I was there with my mother and even she was laughing.... not that my mother can't laugh, but rather that she couldn't even sit through 20 minutes of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (also a smaller-budget black comedy). If you get and keep my mother's attention with a film, you're good. She could not stop laughing.

During the intermission the cinema's owner actually called me to the front of the theatre... so I guess I had my special premiere after all :-)

Dutch actress Thekla Reuten, pregnant hotel owner Marie in In Bruges, has done an interview for the Dutch edition of Glamour Magazine. This I heard from my flatmate, who laughingly also slipped that she talks about In Bruges and her In Bruges co-stars, but my flatmate just happened to forget her magazine on the other side of the country. I can't find the interview in the Glamour that's in the stores now.

If you happen to have that interview, could you email it to me? Otherwise we'll just have to wait until next week Monday.

DVD REVIEW TO COME SOON

In two weeks my flight for Arizona leaves, so I will be in the US for the In Bruges dvd release. I will buy it the first day I can get my hands on it and write a review of all the extra features without spoiling anything. It might take a while because I'll be in the middle of the frickin' desert doing funny things like looking for tarantulas and hiking down the Grand Canyon. So some delay may occur. Orders can not be taken through this site - meaning I can't bring dvds back for those of you who asked, unfortunately I do not have the authority to do so. You can order through Amazon. And if you are gonna do that anyway, make sure to let Amazon know you are ordering the DVD from their site through Colin Farrell Fansite, that way the site gets payed a little for your purchase.

Until then you'll have to do with my DVD review. And before that, the Belgian and Dutch cinema releases are still ahead. Enjoy your beautiful city and The Netherlands' actress Thekla Reuten on the big screen this month, finally. Yeah we were last but now it's our turn.

HALL OF FAME GALLERY SOON TO BE UPDATED?

As I mentioned in the website section "When In Bruges", last summer I went back to Bruges and went back to Hotel De Tuilerieeen to check out the hall of fame. Back when I was watching the filming in February 2007, I only knew who Colin Farrell was. Last summer I also became a Ralph Fiennes fan. So when I returned to Bruges and saw the hall of fame, they were the only ones I recognized and took pictures of (check out the gallery). Now after the promotion, of course, I would also recognize Martin McDonagh - but not back then. So I never got around to check if he's up in the Hall of Fame and if so to take a picture. My dad will be going to Bruges during the weekend I am leaving for Arizona, and he's going to check it out and take a picture if Martin's up there.

YOU SHOULD GOOGLE YOURSELF OR SOMETHING

In a recent GQ interview, Colin Farrell admitted to Google himself. Good for Colin. This of course implies he would have at least once taken a look (even if just for a second) at his main fansite, Colin Farrell Fansite. Now in an older interview we spotted the following quote from Martin McDonagh:

I just saw an image or two online somewhere and thought it would be a beautiful place to check out."

And because generally my life isn't all that exciting, and because I'm a big fan of Martin's (like I said, since only recently, but still), I just wanted to express that since he apparently knows how to turn on the computer and go online... that I really hope he's seen this website. And I hope he's pleased with the support. That's all I wanted to say. (By the way I'm single :-P --- I made a joke!!... or did I?).

I'd do it myself, but I'll be in the US on the day of the dvd release, so my money is on running to the store (in the desert - I'll be in Arizona) first thing in the morning and watching it all day long. But if you want to be sure to just get it sent to your home the first day possible, order it online, it's probably a lot easier. Especially since I don't know which stores and how many of them will sell the DVD. Limited releases make people wary of releases ;-)

Over the years, the playwright has turned brothers against brothers, pushed a daughter to murder her mother, drowned a priest, broken countless hearts and killed several small animals.

In McDonagh's plays, even the most seemingly normal person can turn out to be a sociopath. In his feature debut, In Bruges, the sociopaths turn out to be as normal as the rest of us. The movie offers up carnage, emotional torment and a racist dwarf as it follows two hit men sent to the Belgian city after a job gone bad — but, in the end, it's really just a tale of love and honor. McDonagh describes the film as the most hopeful thing he has ever written. "It's about guilt, redemption, self-sacrifice, and it could have been much bleaker," he says. "But we always had the comedy to keep despair at the door."

The comedy is McDonagh's signature. He can shock an audience into laughing at just about anything (suicide, patricide, terrorism, famine), and his expletive-ridden dialogue — its cadence and Celtic slang borrowed from his Irish background — can make even the most banal comment sound like a punch line. Audiences first fell for McDonagh's gritty, witty brand of theater in 1996, when his first play, The Beauty Queen of Leenane — about the love-hate relationship between a spinster and her domineering mother — won the then 26-year-old a handful of awards and the first of many Tony nominations. Since then, he has been selling out theaters from Broadway to the West End with seven plays, all written in a 10-month spurt during a bout of unemployment in the mid-'90s.

Not bad for a guy who didn't even want to write plays, but movies; McDonagh turned to theater only after all his film scripts were rejected. His second chance at his first love came when he wrote and directed the 2004 short film Six Shooter, about a grieving widower on a bizarre and ultimately deadly train journey. It won an Oscar, and soon after he was in Bruges shooting In Bruges.

The idea for the film — part buddy flick, part thriller, part existential drama — came to McDonagh on a weekend away in the quaint Flemish city. On day one, he was taken with the place: "the canals, the cobbled streets, the fairy tale-like quality of it." By day two, he was bored out of his mind. And from his conflicting desires — get some culture vs. get drunk — his two characters, Ray and Ken, were born. After botching a job, newbie hit man Ray (played by Colin Farrell) and his mentor Ken (Brendan Gleeson) are sent to Bruges to cool their heels. As they wait for instructions from boss Harry (Ralph Fiennes), Ken wants to take in the sights but Ray would rather meet girls and make fun of American tourists. The film's first half is pure comedy, as Ken and Ray bicker like two overgrown schoolkids. Then a second hit goes wrong and things get bloody.

After a career spent in the wings watching others direct his work, McDonagh wasn't comfortable calling the shots at first. "The buck has never stopped with me before," he says. "It was terrifying." But the actors profited from his inexperience as a filmmaker. "Because he's a playwright, he's very particular about how the dialogue is spoken," Fiennes says. "The nuances, the rhythms, the repetitions are so specific, even with the four-letter words, that we wanted to get it exactly right. And we were excited by the challenge."

The excitement got to McDonagh, too, and he's looking forward to making another movie. But not yet. "Everything's been a whirlwind since my first play, and I haven't had time to step back and analyze that," he says. "I just need some quiet time to write, hang out and grow up." And to hone that twisted sense of humor. "I'd actually like to try a romantic comedy," he says with a grin. "A different kind. One with dead kids in it." Odds are, he's only half joking.
